Phil Johnson Messages from Central Baptist Theological Seminary

Colonial Baptist Church and Central Baptist Theological Seminary were pleased to host Phil Johnson on October 13 and 14.

Phil is Executive Director of Grace to You (www.gty.org). He teaches regularly as a lay pastor at Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, CA. He has been closely associated with John MacArthur since 1981 and edits most of Dr. MacArthur’s major books. Phil is an elder at Grace Church, a trustee of the UK-based Martyn Lloyd-Jones Recordings Trust, and a member of FIRE.  Phil is probably best known for his websites, which include The Spurgeon Archive (www.spurgeon.org) and a blog known as Pyromaniacs (teampyro.blogspot.com).

On Wednesday night Phil spoke to the church family on the topic of salvation assurance.  CBC was greatly blessed by his pulpit ministry, personal ministry, and free resources from Grace To You.

On Thursday Phil lectured to the Faculty, Students, and guests of CBTS.  His first study was a “Primer on Postmodernism” which evaluated the popular evangelical landscape through the lens of timeless scriptural wisdom.  Phil’s second study was on “Spurgeon: The Controversialist” where we saw our evangelical times through the lens of Spurgeon’s life.  The Prince of Preachers found himself standing in contrast to much of the pastoral ministry of his day, as will any preacher in any generation. Phil’s third session was a Question/Answer time where he was able to discuss further the challenges facing our generation in the gospel ministry.  In the final fourth session Phil charged the conferees from Second Timothy 4 to “preach the Word, even when it is out of season.”  It was a powerful, appropriate conclusion to the entire morning’s material and trajectory.

CBC and CBTS thank Phil Johnson and Grace To You for the footprint they left here.  We are committed to the same gospel, celebrate the same Redeemer, and are satisfied and content with the same sufficient Word.
